چکیده

Contact lenses are used as a method of correcting refractive errors. However, their use can be associated with periods of discomfort as well as occasional pathophysiological reactions. This inaugural edition of Optometry Rounds presents the latest findings to allow Optometrists to improve the experience of their patients who wear contact lenses, as well as to share knowledge with respect to contact lens maintenance. The following specific points will be addressed: Physiological effects of contact lens wear • Clinical significance of deposits and pathogens on the surface of contact lenses • How to interpret corneal staining related to contact lens maintenance solutions • Effects of method of wear on patient comfort •

A Study on the Contact Ellipse and the Contact Pressure During the Wheel Wear through Passing the Tracks including Several Sharp Curves

Wheel wear has been a concern in the railway for several decades. Studying the form change of the wheel/rail contacts in particular railways consisting of sharp curves helps to identify the risk of severe or catastrophic wear to minimize maintenance costs in order to be competitive in the transportation business. In this paper, the wheel/rail contact was studied on the particular railways. The ...

Acanthamoeba keratitis is increasingly being diagnosed among people who wear thrapeutic and cosmetic contact lenses. The chain of events is thought to begin with contamination of the contact lens storage cases with Acanthamoeba from household or mains water supplies. If bacteria contamination is also present then these amoebas can multiply by ingesting the bacteria as a food source. If the cont...

Corneal and conjunctival sensory function: the impact on ocular surface sensitivity of change from low to high oxygen transmissibility contact lenses.

PURPOSE Deprivation of oxygen to the ocular surface during contact lens wear has been implicated in the alteration of sensory function. This study investigates whether increasing oxygen availability through discontinuation of contact lens wear or transfer into highly oxygen transmissible (high Dk/t) lenses leads to a change in corneal or conjunctival sensitivity. METHODS Twenty-seven long-ter...

Corneal epithelial and aqueous humor acidification during in vivo contact lens wear in rabbits.

PURPOSE Based on contact lens-induced stromal acidification of the cornea, it has been suggested that the corneal epithelial and endothelial cells also become acidotic during contact lens wear. This alleged acidification may have a role in altered cell appearance and metabolism during contact lens wear. This study investigated the effects of anoxia, carbon dioxide retention, and contact lens ga...

A multi-country assessment of compliance with daily disposable contact lens wear.

PURPOSE To investigate compliance with daily disposable contact lens (DDCL) wear and investigate re-use of lenses according to country and DDCL material worn. METHODS Optometrists invited eligible DDCL patients from their practices to participate in a survey on DDCL wear in Australia, Norway, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Eligible participants completed an online or pape...
